English Bulldogs are one of if not the hardest dogs to breed and the come with a load of health problems. With the time and dedication most breeders place into breeding this dog, C-Section, Health Certification ect. No wonder they are priced so high.

  • Talltail

Bulldogs are expensive dogs to breed. Most have to get artificially inseminated and have c-sections. And if badly bred, bulldogs can have a lot of health problems. Most breeders of this dog are very dedicated breeders and it takes a lot of time and money to breed and raise these dogs. I’m sure you’ll be able to rescue one for a cheaper price, but these dogs are usually very expensive.

Easy………..anybody who use the WRONG NAME for the breed is an ignorant BYB !!!!
It’s BULLDOG-PERIOD!!! GO PROVE that by reading the breed standard at the AKC site-not a “doggy-woggy-coloring-book-for- moronic -kids.com”!!

BULLDOGS are very difficult to breed & being a current “fad-for-fools” ,are being cranked in their pisspoor quality thousands by every jerk & their greedy uncle.

Because there are no “Reasonably-priced” English Bulldogs. They are a breed with many health problems, one of which is difficult to breed. Other problems are mostly respiratory-related, and bone strength and formatgion and cancer. They are very prone to diseases. They are considered, therefore among the rarer breeds because of availability of healthy dogs; therefore they cost a a king’s ransom Other dogs make great pets. The American Boxer is one. I have three…The oldest is 13 and still very active. The other two are 18 months old. Great companions, playful, easy temperment, easy going with people..

PS I got my 2 pups (full blooded) at a no-kill rescue shelter…Lot less expensive…

Well, the reason they cost so much $$ is because they often need a C-section because they cannot whelp naturally being that the pup’s heads are so big. If you are in the USA, try the AKC, they have a list of breeders(reputable) from the breed club. Good luck!!

I would consider the morality of purchasing a show type English bulldog. The reason it’s hard to find a breeder with dogs at a cheaper price is becuase most bulldogs can not give birth naturally, pups need to be born by C-section and the breed has numerous health problems.

Even if you get a healthy pup without any serious problems, bulldogs still have trouble running and breathing - he will never enjoy the same quality of life as a more healthy dog.

If you like bulldogs consider an ‘American’ or prehaps ‘Victorain’ type bulldog which are known to be somewhat more healthy.

Bulldogs are expensive to breed properly. That is reflected in the price.

I would look into Boston Terriers, American Bulldogs, and Boxers…they have the same look without the extremely expensive price tag.

My aunt owned an Old English Bulldog..the poor dog smelled very doggie despite proper bathing/grooming…dug holes the size of WWI trenches….snored worse than my Dad (and he was pretty bad), drooled horribly and if you were not careful with her diet, the flatulence was beyond description…plus she had some health problems…….

Expect to shell out at least 1,200.00 or more for the type of bulldog you want.

Reasonable price and bulldog never go together.

A well bred english bulldog will cost $2,000 to $3,000 and up.

They are one of the most expensive dogs to breed (artificial insemination and c-section births) and prone to many, many health problems, so it is worth it to save up your money to get the dog from a reputable breeder.

reputable breeders put a lot of money into their dogs.

They have the costs of obtaining a show dog to begin with
the costs of showing.. time off work/handler fees, travel expenses, entry fees etc.
genetic health tests.. there are many that need done, and they are not cheap
    stud fees
artificial insemination costs, these dogs often cannot mate naturally, so AI is required.. its costly to collect, store and use.. and AI often does not take, so it may take several attempts using AI to impregnant a female.
    Prenatal care is not cheap
Cecarians are pretty much a guarantee with this breed.. which is not cheap.

They also have small litters for their size, 4-5 pups or so… Considering how much work it takes the get the dog pregnant to begin with, a breeder may be lucky to get ONE litter out of her, despite all the costs of showing and health tests.

A reputable breeder is already loosing money on a litter.. they cant afford to let the pups go any cheaper.

If price is a concern for you, try shelter or rescue

Yes they are difficult to breed as many have said. However, I have to say as i am an English Bulldog owner(and yes it IS English Bulldog) that reliable breeders will not sell a bullie in poor health. Although they can be prone to problems I would pay the price, they are worth every penny. They are simply the sweetest most gentle souls!! They are amazing with small babies and older children and most get along great with other pets. They are an amazing breed. And although they are not the most active breed, that was nonsense someone wrote about them not enjoying a happy healthy life. My dogs are extremely happy and live to cuddle and be around people. Great breed! Period!
